 2009-10 ZONE LITERACY AWARD TO

White Bear Lake Rotary Club

The Rotary Club of White Bear Lake is in Rotary Zone 28 of 34 zones world-wide and is made up of 12 Districts in the 7 state area and part of Canada. The White Bear Lake Rotary Club was 1 of only 4 in District 5960 to have received this prestigious award. The activities of the White Bear Lake Rotary Club over this past year which qualified the Club for this award were as follows:

1) Camp RYLA – Two local students were sponsored for Business Ethics and the 4 Way Test

2) Camp Enterprise – Two local students were sponsored for Business Ethics and the 4 Way Test

3) Mountain of 10,000 Books - We worked with two other clubs and TRF in 2009 on a Mountain Of Books literacy project that was published in Apr 2010 "Rotary World" bulletin. Here is the article - Books to Jamaica Staff at the Whittick's Day Care Center in Kingston,
Jamaica, used to create handmade storybooks with pictures cut out from magazines. But last year, the center, along with 200 other early childhood institutions throughout the country, received more than 10,000 children's books from the Rotary Club of Kingston. Valued at over US$29,500, the project was undertaken in partnership with the country's Early Childhood Commission and supported by two Matching Grants with the U.S. Rotary Clubs of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, and Naples North, Florida.

4) Vocational Service Career Mentoring – Rotation of 25 High School Students in an inner circle to 22 White Bear Lake Rotarians in an outer circle in order to interview students for career choice, educational requirements and business ethics

5) Australian GSE Team and Indian GSE Team was hosted by our club for one week each to visit various businesses and state governmental agencies for cultural and educational exchanges.

6) Outbound GSE Team to India – WBL Rotarian Jim Hunt sponsored by the club to lead GSE Team members to India in cultural exchange. Jim used the expertise to lead the second GSE team as an alternate team lead. Identified a community member Sarah Bjerke to join the GSE Team which the club sponsored also.

7) Host World Program for Russian Visitors – sharing 4 Way Test both visually and demonstrated by our actions. There was one Rotarian from Siberia along with 5 other Russian guests. No English was spoken but for one translator who studied in CA. The guests were completely hosted by the club for 10 days where visitations to school systems, hospitals and mentally disabled support organizations were arranged for educational, cultural and American Business Ethics. We are now planning a similar trip of up 12 people to visit Siberia this summer!

8) International TRF Grant for Adult Day Care for business skills training. Some examples include computer graphic arts, Arts and crafts, etc in Jamaica with Kingston Club.

9) Hosting Video Conference of US Spanish 6th Grade Class with Costa Rican English 6th Grade Class exchange in Don Bosco school in Costa Rica sponsored by White Bear Lake Rotary this month for better understanding and cultural exchange.

10) Raised and funded 2 $5000 STRIVE Scholarships for White Bear HS Students to attend College. WBL Rotarians mentor STRIVE candidates to improve their lives academically for increased grades and professionally with interviewing skills.
