Outstanding Rotarian

Wednesday, March 16, 2005 White Bear Press

White Bear Lake resident Roy Havenor got an unexpected birthday present this year.

On March 5, the Rotary Club of White Bear Lake presented him with its Outstanding Rotarian Award. The award was presented to Havenor, a charter member of the club, at a special meeting/dinner. While Havenor appreciates the award, he would rather have recognition go to the Rotary Club for its actions, not what he does.

"I am very grateful, yes," Havenor said. "I am not really for gloating, though. I told the members there were many more eligible for this award than I was."

Since the Rotary Club was established in White Bear Lake in 1979, Havenor has maintained a 100 percent meeting attendance. He was president of the club from 1983-84 and the award came during the 100th anniversary of Rotary International, as well as the 25th anniversary of the White Bear Lake club.

"I think this is one of the finest international service clubs worldwide," Havenor said.

The award is given, as it states on the award plaque, "In recognition of sustained exemplary service to our community and club and modeling the ideals of Rotary."

Rotary member and former club President Bill Rust saw these things in Havenor, which is why he nominated him.

"Roy is an icon in the community," Rust said. "He participates in every possible event. Whether it be verbal support or actually participating in the event."

Rust recalled one of his favorite moments with Havenor was when the Rotary Park was being built on Ninth Street.

"Roy was always bringing coffee or doughnuts or something to the workers," Rust said. "He is a real inspiring influence to the people he is around."

Havenor also helps out with the annual fund-raiser each year, where he has helped with everything from advertising to selling tickets. But Havenor wasn't afraid to do the little things either.

"Even if it would be just setting up chairs," Rust said. "He is always there to help."

Havenor said some of his favorite moments were attending two Rotary conventions in Niece, France and Kansas City, Mo. The 100th Rotary annual convention is in Chicago, Ill., this year. Havenor has not yet decided if he will attend.

Havenor was the second recipient of the Outstanding Rotarian Award, which is determined by the Recognition Committee. Ken Baltzer was the first recipient last year, although the award is not to be given out annually.

Havenor also is a member of the White Bear Lake Chamber of Commerce and the White Bear Lake Lions Club. He is the director at Havenor Funeral Chapel Inc. and Cremation.
