Chili Cookoff
Apr 16, 2026 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
It is time to stir the pot and sharpen your wits! Our first Chili Cookoff and Trivia Night is fast approaching, and while the competition will be spicy, the real goal is even better: bringing all White Bear Lake Rotarians together to simply enjoy each other's company.

Whether you are a culinary master, a trivia titan, or just a fan of a hearty bowl of chili, we want you (and your spouse or significant other!) there to share in the fun.

How to Join the Fray:
  • The Chef: Bring a pot of your secret-recipe chili and compete for the honorary "prize."
  • The Judge: Come hungry, taste the entries, and help us crown the "Best Chili" champion. (Yes, you can cook and judge—just not your own!)
  • The Hero: Sign up as a volunteer for setup or takedown. It is not a huge lift, but we could use a few hands for some "table-lifting" and logistics.
Event Details:
  • When: April 16, 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM
  • Where: BoatWorks Commons Community Room (4495 Lake Ave S)
  • The Fun: Chili tasting, voting, and local trivia provided by Sara Hanson and the White Bear Lake Historical Society.
Come hungry for competition and community to celebrate the White Bear Lake Rotary family!

How to sign up:
1. Click the Sign-Up link to complete the registration.
2. You can email Bob Timmons or Sharon Trudell.

We look forward to seeing everyone there!

Penguin Playerrs performance
Jun 07, 2026 2:00 PM

From the White Bear Press

The Penguin Players perform “This is Me: An Inclusive Cabaret Celebration,” featuring the music of “Footloose,” 7 p.m. Saturday, June 6, and 2 p.m. Sunday, June 7, at the White Bear Lake Area High School Theater, 5040 Division Ave., Door A. For tickets and details, visit northernstarz.org/ns-off-site-events-and-shows.

School may be out at White Bear, but their theater lights are staying on. This weekend, the Penguin Players—a theater troupe for people with developmental disabilities, ages 16 and up—will perform a musical revue featuring selections from the musical “Footloose.”

Penguin Players is one of three programs for people with disabilities that is run out of Northern Starz Center for Performing Arts, a nonprofit theater in the City of Ramsey. While the Ramsey location boasts an entire season worth of programming, executive director Rachel Bohnsack saw a need in White Bear as well.

“More individuals with special needs need more things to do,” Bohnsack stated, “and theater has never been one of those things that has been accessible to them on a larger scale.”

Northern Starz’ creative director, Kyle Frederickson, explained that all three Penguin programs stage well-known shows, such as “Annie” or “Willy

Wonka,” then fit the show to the cast’s abilities without simplifying the content.

“This is not a sideshow attraction,” Frederickson said. “There’s not one person who goes and doesn’t come out of it crying because it’s so well done.”

‘The actors are doing what they should be doing at their age and ability level,” Bohnsack added.

Bohnsack used Northern Starz’ recent production of “Aladdin” as an example, in which the actor who played The Genie was nonverbal. To work around this, the actor delivered her lines through a voice box, and a “genie choir” performed all of her musical numbers. This version’s Genie, then, had a unique, mystical feel, and the actor still delivered an effective performance.

“That’s what the fun part about the Penguin Players is,” Frederickson said. “It does not matter if you are wheelchair bound or if you are nonverbal. You have a good chance of getting a lead.”

Northern Starz is also home to Penguin Pals, for ages 5-12, and Penguin Project, for ages 10-21. Having programming for all ages, Bohnsack described, helps foster a continued sense of confidence in people with developmental disabilities.

“We had a nonverbal kid last year,” Frederickson recalled, “and we gave him the part of a dog. He was so excited. That’s what he wanted to do, and he was so happy … on stage, and everybody gave him encouragement. So now, he’s starting to be verbal, and his parents are like, ‘This is amazing.’”

Each Penguin artist also has a peer mentor, someone close by in age who can confidently support an individual with special needs.

“Theater kids and choir kids love being mentors because they’re back on stage,” Frederickson stated. “They have to get costumed, and they have to know all the lines.” While peer mentors serve as a kind of understudy, they almost always become dear friends with the artists.

“Spending so much time one-on-one with each other?” Frederickson remarked. “The mentors start to realize Penguins are just like everybody else.”

The J Stanley and Doris Hill Legacy Award
Jun 09, 2026 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM

Ken Galloway has been named the recipient of the J. Stanley and Doris Hill Legacy Award.

The J Stanley and Doris Hill Legacy Award honors the memory of Stan and Doris Hill for their remarkable commitment to community service. Ken Galloway is being recognized by the Greater White Bear Lake Community Foundation for his extensive volunteer service to the communities that share the shores of White Bear Lake and beyond its borders.

Ken Galloway has been a dedicated community leader in White Bear Lake for more than two decades. A Rotary member since 2004 and past Club President, he established the BEARly Open Golf Tournament on Ice, which has generated over $3 million in food purchasing power for the White Bear Area Food Shelf. He remains actively involved as event chair.

Ken has also played key roles in numerous local initiatives, including Explore White Bear, White Bear Events, Manitou Days, and founding the annual Gazebo Lighting Ceremony. His leadership extends to board service with the White Bear Area Food Shelf, Chamber of Commerce, and White Bear Lake Area Education Foundation, along with continued volunteer support.

In addition, Ken has contributed to major community events and capital campaigns, including the Governor's Fishing Opener, Taste of White Bear Lake, the YMCA, Hanifl Performing Arts Center and Lakeshore Players Theatre. His long-standing commitment reflects a deep passion for strengthening the White Bear community.

"I feel that strong and vibrant communities contribute very positively to the lives of all citizens. Strong communities are safer, kinder, and more economically successful," Galloway said. "And simply put, helping others and contributing just make me feel good. All of my thoughts can be wrapped up in a feeling of gratitude for the good fortune I have been dealt in life."

Join us in honoring Ken at a reception:

About White Bear Lake Rotary

Our club members are dedicated people who share a passion for both community service and friendship. Our club meets weekly, but recognizes that this schedule may be difficult for some.  Therefore, members can participate in any of our other activities such as socials, committees and volunteer projects that are scheduled at various times throughout each month.
